What to Expect on Sunday

The heartbeat of our faith community is Sunday worship. Here's what we do:

First of all, we start gathering at 11 AM. Our service usually begins about ten minutes after.

We wear what we're comfortable in. For some, that's a suit or Sunday dress, and for others it's jeans and t-shirt.

We are a small congregation and we like it that way! That means when you visit, you will not blend into a crowd. But we promise to make you feel right at home.

We follow a Lutheran pattern for worship: Gathering (with words of confession and forgiveness, and with song), Word (scripture readings, sermon, and prayer), Meal (Holy Communion), and Sending (more singing!).

Near the beginning of the service, we move around the sanctuary space and greet each other with the peace of Christ. For folks who know each other and are comfortable, this can happen with a hug, and we also greet each other with handshakes, elbow bumps, and friendly waves.

We sing from a collection of African American Gospel hymns, and twice a month our Gospel choir sings.

We love kids! Young people are present throughout our service and help lead in various roles. Kids are invited forward for their own message with the pastor, and then have the option to leave with a teacher during the sermon for a Bible time more on their level. They return in time to help collect the offering and assist during communion.

We have a time of community sharing in response to the sermon, when worshipers are invited to share prayer requests, praises, and testimonies of how they've experienced God in their lives. We pass the microphone and anyone is welcome to share.

We welcome everyone to Holy Communion regardless of age, religious background, or any other factor. We gather in a big circle around the altar and share the meal which is a piece of bread and a small cup of wine or grape juice. Holy Communion is a mystery in which Jesus promises to be present with us and we believe, beyond our understanding, that is somehow true.

Lastly, you're only a visitor once! After that, you're part of the community, and our hope is that that feels true for you.

There is lots more to say about Christian and Lutheran beliefs and why we do the things we do in worship, and that's a conversation to have with Pastor Matt over coffee, not read on a website. If you have questions or something piques your curiosity, please reach out and we'll make it happen!
